She says the words he yearns to hear

He lets them caress away his fear

He wants to believe there’s been no change

But he senses a hint of something strange

In the way she smiles and casts her eyes

The tilt of her head betrays her lies

His doubt holds him down with regret

Can she possibly forgive and forget

He’ll cling to promises from time past

With his heart in his hands holding fast
